GROWTH OF FISHING AND NEW PROJECTS AND ADVANCES FOR 2023.

Fishing is one of the main activities in our country, according to Produce, in Peru it contributes 65% of hydrobiological products destined for direct human consumption; that is, it supplies 2 out of every 3 of these products consumed in the country and takes advantage of close to 300 species out of the thousand available in the Peruvian sea, promoting the diversified consumption of marine biodiversity.

By the end of October 2022, fish landings exceeded 104,000 tons and grew 17.8%, consolidating consecutive growth throughout the year. Therefore, it is expected that 2023 will continue to be a year of growth for the fishing sector.

Likewise, we are beginning to see the first efforts on the part of the state to revalue fishing in our country, mainly artisanal fishing, ensuring the protection, promotion, encouragement and development necessary to guarantee its sustainability through formalization, training and capacity building of artisanal fishermen. This initiative guarantees that the fishing activity is governed under the principles of sustainability, precautionary principle, participation, quality, nutrition, safety and health; as well as traceability of hydrobiological resources, transparency and accountability, among others.

On the other hand, PRODUCE has been working on measures to strengthen MSEs, and this year launched the “Con Punche Productivo” program, a project that will promote public procurement, provide financing and technical assistance to MSEs to improve their productive capacity.

At Fernandez we have also been working on projects that allow us to continue guaranteeing the quality of all our products. Therefore, we are proud to be part of TrazApp, a system created by WWF Peru, with the aim that anyone within the supply chain can access, share and interconnect information of the fishing activity digitally in order to contribute to the sustainability of artisanal fisheries.

Thanks to this initiative, international markets will have the certainty that our products come from sustainable fisheries and that they have a traceability that guarantees the legal origin of the resource.

Undoubtedly, 2023 will be a year that will provide multiple and new opportunities for the fisheries sector, which will allow our country to continue accessing new international markets.
